1. Microgel Interactions with Peptides and Proteins : Consequence of Peptide and Microgel Properties
Sammanfattning : Microgels are lightly cross-linked hydrogel particles in the sub-micrometer to micrometer size range with a capacity to drastically change their volume in response to changes in the external environment. Microgels have an ability to bind and store substances such as biomacromolecular drugs, notably proteins and peptides, and release them upon stimuli, making them potential candidates as drug delivery vehicles and functional biomaterials. 2. Fluids, Gels and Crystals : Phase behavior of binary thermoresponsive microgel mixtures
Sammanfattning : Thermoresponsive colloidal microgels expel solvent from their interior upon crossing a threshold temperature, resulting in a significantly reduced size. The collapse of microgels can reversibly switch the interparticle interactions from soft repulsive to attractive, and the accompanying size reduction allows for precise control over volume fraction. 3. Interaction Between Microgels and Oppositely Charged Proteins
Sammanfattning : This thesis reports on interactions between microgels and oppositely charged proteins. Two types of negatively charged microgels are investigated: poly(acrylic acid) microgels of 60-80 µm in diameter, and colloidal poly(NIPAM-co-acrylic acid) microgels of around 1 µm in diameter. 4. Microgels as drug delivery vehicles : loading and release of amphiphilic drugs
Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolyte microgels are used as delivery vehicles for amphiphilic drugs in, e.g., treatments of liver cancer by a method called trans-arterial chemoembolization. LÄS MER
5. In vitro evaluation of formulations used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma
Sammanfattning : Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) causes ~ 600,000 deaths annually, making it the second most deadly cancer form. HCC is classified into five stages and for the intermediate HCC treatment, the two most commonly used drug delivery systems (DDSs) are lipiodol-based emulsions and drug-eluting beads. LÄS MER
