1. Microbial Responses to Antibiotics – Stability of Resistance and Extended Potential of Targeting the Folate Synthesis
Sammanfattning : Resistance to antimicrobials is an increasing problem in the world of today, and develops faster than man can counter. It is therefore of importance to study metabolic pathways in order to develop new antibiotics, but also to understand how resistance spreads and stabilizes in microbial populations. LÄS MER
2. Macrolide Antibiotics in Bacterial Protein Synthesis
Sammanfattning : Macrolides are a large group of clinically relevant antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the large ribosomal subunit in the peptide exit tunnel, close to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC). We have shown that the peptide length of the resulting peptidyl-tRNA drop-off products is proportional to the distance between the PTC and the respective macrolide in the tunnel. LÄS MER
3. Molecular detection and epidemiological studies of atypical bacteria causing respiratory tract infections
Sammanfattning : Respiratory infections are common causes of morbidity and mortality. Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Bordetella pertussis cause respiratory infection, often with similar symptoms. Molecular diagnostic methods are preferred since these bacteria are difficult to culture. LÄS MER
4. Characterization of resistance to quinolones, sulfonamide and trimethoprim in Campylobacter jejuni as well as to macrolides in the related bacterium, Helicobacter pylori
Sammanfattning : Gastroenteritis caused by C. jejuni is usually a mild to moderate self-limiting disease. Treatment is recommended in some cases. In recent years, quinolones have been increasingly used to treat acute bacterial enteritis. LÄS MER
5. Group A Streptococci; Epidemiology and Genetics of Antibiotic Resistance
Sammanfattning : Group A streptococci (GAS) cause throat and skin infections, severe invasive diseases as well as the non-suppurative complications acute rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. GAS have retained susceptibility to betalactam drugs, but resistance to alternative antibiotics is of concern. LÄS MER
