1. Unveiling biomacromolecule interactions-NMR and optical spectroscopy studies on ligand binding to DNA and lysozyme
Sammanfattning : Studies on intercalation of bulky binuclear ruthenium compounds into DNA have attracted attention due to their slow dissociation rate and sequence selectivity. Previous results showed that dumb-bell shaped molecules of the type [μ-(bidppz)(L)4Ru2]4+, L=phenanthroline or bipyridine, bind rapidly on the surface of DNA prior to intercalation. LÄS MER
2. Amyloid-β and lysozyme proteotoxicity in Drosophila : Beneficial effects of lysozyme and serum amyloid P component in models of Alzheimer’s disease and lysozyme amyloidosis
Sammanfattning : In the work presented this thesis, two different conditions that are classified as protein misfolding diseases: Alzheimer's disease and lysozyme amyloidosis and proteins that could have a beneficial effect in these diseases, have been studied using Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly. The fruit fly has been used for over 100 years to study and better understand fundamental biological processes. LÄS MER
3. Understanding the dual nature of lysozyme: part villain – part hero : A Drosophila melanogaster model of lysozyme amyloidosis
Sammanfattning : Amyloid proteins are a distinct class of proteins that can misfold into β-sheet rich structures that later mature to form the characteristic species known as amyloid fibrils, and accumulate in tissues in the human body. The misfolding event is often caused by mutations (or outer factors such as changes in pH) that destabilize the native protein structure. LÄS MER
4. Effect of water on the glass transition and properties of solid-state pharmaceutical formulations
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to increase our knowledge of the glassy state and the glass transition phenomenon and to evaluate the effect of water on the glassy state. To accomplish this, investigations were focused on the amorphous sucrose-water (paper I, II, III), trehalose-water (paper I), maltodextrin-water (paper I), and lysozyme-sucrose-water (paper IV) systems. 5. Enzyme Printed Fabrics : Bio‐functionalisation of Synthetic Textiles by Digital Inkjet Printing
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the possibilities of printing enzymes using resource-efficient technologies to promote the binding of other proteins and biomaterials on synthetic textiles. This strategy can be used to develop advanced textiles for applications, for example, in antimicrobial, drug delivery and biosensing. LÄS MER
