1. Designing order with long-range interactions in mesoscopic magnetic chains
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates how the low-energy magnetic configuration of a mesoscopic chain can be tuned by geometrical modifications. The magnetic arrays made by single-domain stadium shaped elements positioned side-by-side were fabricated by patterning into a sputtered ferromagnetic thin film. LÄS MER
2. First-principles calculations of long-range intermolecular dispersion forces
Sammanfattning : This work presents first-principles calculations of long-range intermolecular dispersion energies between two atoms or molecules as expressed in terms of the C6 dipole-dipole dispersion coefficients. In a series of publications, it has been shown by us that the complex linear polarization propagator method provides accurate ab initio and first-principles density functional theory values of the C6 dispersion coefficients in comparison with those reported in the literature. 3. Bound by long-range interactions: Molecular crystals and benzene on Cu(111)
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates molecular systems bound by long-range interactions. Westudy molecular crystals held together by van der Waals forces and the physisorption of benzene (Bz) on Cu(111). LÄS MER
4. Spin ice and demagnetising theory
Sammanfattning : Frustration, or the inability to simultaneously minimise all local interactions is, a phenomenon occurring in a broad number of physical systems. We will in this thesis focus on a class of frustrated ferromagnetic materials called spin ices and how both numerical and experimental techniques can be used to understand their properties. LÄS MER
5. Exploring the Interactive Landscape of Lipid Bilayers
Sammanfattning : One of the most important aspects for all life on this planet is theact to keep their cellular processes in a state where they do notreach equilibrium. One part in the upholding of this imbalanced stateis the barrier between the cells and their surroundings, created bythe cell membrane. LÄS MER
