  1. 1. Habitat selection, nest predation and conservation biology in a Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) population

    Författare :Tomas Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Black-tailed godwit; Limosa limosa; nest site selection; nest predation; philopatry; risk analysis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on a black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa) population, consisting of 35-40 pairs, that breeds on a grazed shore meadow on SE Gotland, Sweden. The small size of the population makes it more prone to extinction due to chance events, than a larger population.The godwits showed microhabitat preferences when choosing nest sites. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Sources of variability in heterospecific social information use for breeding habitat selection : Role of genetics and personality in collared flycatchers

    Författare :Jennifer Morinay; Blandine Doligez; Lars Gustafsson; Rachel Kendal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heterospecific social information; personality; aggressiveness; nest site choice; within- and between-individual variability; quantitative genetics; experimental approaches in the wild; collared flycatchers;

    Sammanfattning : All their life, individuals have to make decisions that may strongly affect their fitness. To optimize their decisions, they can use personally acquired information but also information obtained from observing other individuals (“social information”). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard

    Författare :Anna Runemark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Podarcis gaigeae; inbreeding; predation release; polymorphism; island gigantism; the island rule; genetic drift; sexual selection; natural selection; island biology; Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 4. 4. Metapopulations dynamics and sex-specific resource allocation in Silene dioica

    Författare :Elisabet Peedu; Pär Ingvarsson; Barbara Giles; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silene dioica; Skeppvik Archipelago; Metapopulation Dynamics; Population Genetic Structuring; Genetic Diversity; Gene Flow; Sex-Specific Resource Allocation; Cost of Reproduction; Life-History Theory; Sexual Dimorphism; Reproductive Effort; biology; biologi; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Rising archipelagos provide unique settings for the study of the temporal and spatial dynamics of their biota. This offers the possibility to study the ecology and genetics of early successional processes; both between islands that differ in age and within islands when already established organisms have to keep pace with the changing environment. 5. 5. Meiotic Recombination in Human and Dog : Targets, Consequences and Implications for Genome Evolution

    Författare :Jonas Berglund; Matthew Webster; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Leif Andersson; Nadia Singh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombination; biased gene conversion; CpG island; copy number variation; substitutions; methylation; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding the mechanism of recombination has important implications for genome evolution and genomic variability. The work presented in this thesis studies the properties of recombination by investigating the effects it has on genome evolution in humans and dogs. LÄS MER
