  1. 1. Effects of iron supplementation on iron status, health and neurological development in marginally low birth weight infants

    Författare :Staffan Berglund; Magnus Domellöf; Olle Hernell; Michael K Georgieff; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Auditory brainstem response; behavior; breast feeding; cognition; erythropoietin; ferritin; growth; hemoglobin; hepcidin; human infant; iron; iron deficiency; iron deficiency anemia; iron status; iron supplementation; low birth weight; morbidity; neurodevelopment; nutritional requirements; randomized controlled trial; Pediatrics; pediatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Background Due to small iron stores and rapid growth during the first months of life, infants with low birth weight (LBW) are at risk of iron deficiency (ID). ID in infancy is associated with irreversible impaired neurodevelopment. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Clinical effects of reduced iron content and fortification with bovine lactoferrin in infant formula

    Författare :Maria Björmsjö; Staffan K. Berglund; Olle Hernell; Mary Fewtrell; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; infant formula; lactoferrin; bovine lactoferrin; iron; iron supplementation; iron fortification; iron status; infant nutrition; cytokines; neurodevelopment; vaccine response; infection-related morbidity; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Breast milk, with its complex, individual and over time adapting composition, is considered the optimal source of nutrition for infants during the first months of life. Two possible contributing factors to the benefits of breastfeeding compared to infant formula-feeding are the differences in iron and lactoferrin (Lf) concentrations between breast milk and infant formula. 3. 3. Clinical impact of epoetins in the treatment of anemia with special emphasis on patients with lymphoid malignancies. : dosing, iron supplementation and safety

    Författare :Michael Hedenus; Jack Lindh; Anders Österborg; Robert Hast; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; anemia; cancer; lymphoproliferative malignancies; erythropoietin; intravenous iron; safety; Oncology; Onkologi; Oncology; onkologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to determine the relevant dose of arbepoetin-alfa (DA) in patients with lymphoproliferative diseases (LPD) and chemotherapy induced anemia (CIA), to study the clinical impact of intravenous (IV) iron supplementation combined with epoetin beta treatment, to identify factors that might predict hemoglobin (Hb) response to treatment with epoetins and to investigate safety of DA.A dose-finding phase II study was able to assess a reasonable DA dose of 2. 4. 4. Anaemia and iron deficiency in children and women in Tanzania. Effects of dietary iron intake, low iron bioavailability and supplementation with multiple micronutrient beverage

    Författare :Simon Tatala; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; serum ferritin; haemoglobin; multiple micronutrient beverage; dietary iron intake; anaemia; serum retinol; iron deficiency; children and Tanzania; pregnant women; iron bioavailability;

    Sammanfattning : Anaemia was investigated in a rural Tanzanian community to determine its magnitude and causative factors in different population groups. Nutritional anaemia resulting mainly from a diet with a low bioavailability of iron affected more than half of the total number of women and children. LÄS MER
