1. The enterocyte in small intestinal adaption : an experimental and clinicopathological study with special reference to the ultrastructure of the brush border
Sammanfattning : The small intestine mucosa is known to be able to adapt itself to several kinds of both physiological and pathological conditions. The adaptive patterns of the structure of the enterocytes, particularly their apical surface (brush border), were studied in three models: (1) in rats, subjected to antrectomy or antral exclusion, combined with gastroduodenostomy and gastrojejunostomy; (2) in rats with alloxan diabetes; (3) in children with coeliac disease; a) in its active phase; b) after long-term treatment with gluten-free diets; c) after long-term challenge with dietary gluten following treatment; d) after short-term elimination of dietary gluten. 3. Relation Between Drug Exposure and Selection of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria
Sammanfattning : The worldwide increase in antibiotic resistance is a concern for public health. When the appropriate antibiotic dosage is determined, the priorities are efficacy and toxicity. The aim of this thesis was to gain knowledge about the most efficient dosing regimens in order to minimize the emergence and selection of antibiotic-resistant mutants. LÄS MER
4. Antibiotic Resistance and Fitness of Escherichia coli in the Infantile Commensal Microbiota
Sammanfattning : Microbial resistance to antibiotics is a growing problem worldwide. Resistance develops not only in microbes which are the targets of the antibiotic treatment, but also in those belonging to the normal microbiota of the treated host. Little is known on the ecological consequences of antibiotic resistance in commensal bacteria. LÄS MER
5. Avian Influenza Virus : Deciphering receptor interactions and their role in interspecies transmission
Sammanfattning : Influenza A virus (IAV) annually infects approximately 5–15 % of the human population, causing ~500,000 deaths globally. Novel IAVs have emerged and spread pandemically in the human population, but have over time established endemic circulation with reduced pathogenicity causing seasonal influenza. The natural reservoir of IAVs is wild waterfowl. LÄS MER
