  1. 1. Early airway inflammation in allergic asthma : aspects of pulmonary innate immunity

    Författare :Catarina Lensmar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :allergic asthma; low-dose allergen challenge; induced sputum; alveolar macrophage; cytokine; CC16; antibacterial activity; antibacterial peptide;

    Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma is a chronic disease in which allergen-induced inflammatory processes of the airways contribute to the development of symptoms and eventually may lead to remodeling of the airway tissue. In the present work low-dose allergen inhalation challenges of individuals with asthma were used as a model to delineate inflammatory events occurring in an early phase of the allergic airway inflammation associated with asthma. 2. 2. Airway responses to NO2 and allergen in asthmatics

    Författare :Charlotte Barck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Air pollution; nitrogen dioxide; asthma; allergic inflammation; eosinophil cationic protein; neutrophilic cells; bronchoalevolar lavage; nasal lavage; induced sputum;

    Sammanfattning : Nitrogen dioxide (N02), a gas produced by combustion, is a common environmental air pollutant. Individuals with asthma are more sensitive to N02 exposure than healthy subjects, according to results from controlled human-exposure studies. N02 can enhance the asthmatic response to inhaled allergen. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Non-invasive analysis of leukotrienes as biomarkers of airway inflammation : method development and clinical applications

    Författare :Flora Gaber; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Airway inflammation; aspirin-intolerant asthma; biomarker; exhaled breath condensate; FENO; induced sputum; leukotrienes; 5-lipoxygenase; non-invasive analysis; saliva;

    Sammanfattning : Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two common diseases characterized by chronic airway inflammation, but the inflammation in asthma is different from the one in COPD. In addition, asthma is a heterogeneous disease presenting with many different phenotypes (e.g. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Airway allergic inflammation. A role of bone marrow and relationship to substance P

    Författare :Masafumi Tomaki; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; asthma; eosinophils; bone marrow; T lymphocytes; IL-3; IL-5; GM-CSF; substance P.;

    Sammanfattning : Airway inflammation, along with reversible airway narrowing and airway hyperresponsiveness, is a central pathophysiological feature of bronchial asthma. The airway inflammation in asthma is dominated by eosinophils, cells that originate in the bone marrow. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Respiratory and cardiovascular responses to diesel exhaust exposure

    Författare :Håkan Törnqvist; Joel Kaufman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Exposure to traffic-derived air pollution is associated to high incidence of respiratory and cardio-vascular morbidity and mortality. Diesel engines and fossil fuel contribute to a great amount to the ambient particulate matter pollution. LÄS MER
