1. Studies in DNA immunization
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes investigations and developments of DNA immunization techniques, which were applied in the study of two different pathogens; HIV-1 and Chlamydia pneumoniae. DNA vaccines, i.e. naked plasmid DNA encoding an antigen, represent a novel strategy for generating protective immunity against several infectious diseases. LÄS MER
2. Novel immunization strategies and interethnic differences in response to malaria infection
Sammanfattning : A better understanding of the role of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in host resistance to malaria is essential to unravel the complex interactions between the host and the parasite. This would improve the design of malaria vaccines. LÄS MER
3. Studies of T- and B-cells for the generation of human antigen specific antibodies
Sammanfattning : Human antibodies generated in vitro may be highly valuable for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. For a long time most human antibodies produced in vitro have been of the IgM isotype with rather low affinities. In this thesis a method for production of IgG switched antigen-specific human antibodies is presented. LÄS MER
4. The Role of IgM and Complement in Antibody Responses
Sammanfattning : An intact complement system including the complement receptors 1 and 2 (CR1/2) is crucial for the generation of a normal antibody response in animals and humans. Moreover, activation of the classical pathway is thought to be important since deficiency in complement components C1q, C2, C4 or C3 lead to impaired antibody responses. LÄS MER
5. Immune reconstitution after childhood leukemia. Aspects on immunizations and effects of Ara-C on the innate immune system
Sammanfattning : Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be cured with cytotoxic chemotherapy, but myelosuppression and immunosuppression are major side effects causing morbidity and even mortality from infections. Vaccinations with diphtheria toxoid (DT), tetanus toxoid (TT) and protein conjugated Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) capsular polysaccharide were used to investigate the adaptive immune system in a controlled study of 31 children after treatment for ALL.
