  1. 1. Water-Metal Surfaces : Insights from core-level spectroscopy and density functional theory

    Författare :Theanne Schiros; Anders Nilsson; John Hemminger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :water; hydroxyl; metal; surfaces; x-ray spectroscopy; density functional theory; bonding; fuel cell; kemisk fysik; Chemical Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Computational methods are combined with synchrotron-based techniques to analyze the structure and bonding of water and water plus hydroxyl at metal surfaces under UHV and at near-ambient conditions. Water-metal interaction plays a crucial role in a multitude of cosmic, atmospheric and biological phenomena as well as heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry and corrosion. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ion Tracks for Micro- and Nanofabrication : From Single Channels to Superhydrophobic Surfaces

    Författare :Reimar Spohr; Lars Westerberg; Lars Montelius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ion track; single ion; real time; phase detection; conductometric cell; conductometry; electro replication; microtechnology; nanotechnology; surfactant; self organization; GMR; magnetic; sensor technology; hydrophobic; tilted texture.; Physics; Fysik; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Sammanfattning : A method is described for preset-count irradiations between 1 and 100 ions singling-out individual ions from an ion beam with more than a billion ions arriving per second. The ion tracks are etched in a conductometric system with real-time evaluation of the acquired data. The etch process can be interrupted when reaching a preset channel diameter. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Hydrophobic surfaces: Effect of surface structure on wetting and interaction forces

    Författare :Petra M Hansson; Per M. Claesson; Agne Swerin; Adam C Simonsen; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hydrophobic surface; superhydrophobic surface; atomic force microscopy; surface forces; capillary forces; cavitaion; surface roughness; friction; wetting; confocal Raman; contact angles; surface preparation; Langmuir-Blodgett;

    Sammanfattning : The use of hydrophobic surfaces is important for many processes both in nature and industry. Interactions between hydrophobic species play a key role in industrial applications such as water-cleaning procedures and pitch control during papermaking but they also give information on how to design surfaces like hydrophobic mineral pigments. 4. 4. DNA Compaction at Surfaces

    Författare :Marité Cárdenas; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer technology; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; gränsskikt; Ytkemi; Surface and boundary layery chemistry; cationic amphiphiles; DNA; Polymerteknik; surface; biopolymers;

    Sammanfattning : The interfacial behavior of DNA and DNA-cationic surfactant has been studied. Particular attention was paid to the type of cationic surfactant and the DNA conformation (single or double stranded) as well as the DNA length. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings for corrosion protection of steel

    Författare :Lina Ejenstam; Per M. Claesson; Agne Swerin; Jinshan Pan; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Superhydrophobic coating; hydrophobic coating; corrosion protection; contact angles; electrochemical measurements; surface characterization; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Since metals in general, and steels in particular, are vital construction materials in our modern society, the corrosion protection of said materials is of great importance, both to ensure safety and to reduce costs associated to corrosion. Previously, chromium (VI) and other harmful substances were effectively used to provide corrosion protection to steel, but since their use was heavily regulated around year 2000, no coating has yet been developed that, in a fully satisfactory manner, replaces their corrosion protective properties.
