11. The skin surface microenvironment. Aspects on biophysical conditions and microbiology
Sammanfattning : The influence of skin environmental factors has been investigated in five studies. In the first study, the microbial growth and rash development in diaper dermatitis were studied in order to evaluate a UVB radiation therapy in comparison with a combined antifungal-hydrocortisone cream. 12. Glucocorticoids - outcome in patients with glucocorticoid deficiency and Cushing's syndrome
Sammanfattning : Glucocorticoids (GCs) are steroid hormones that have a major impact on human metabolism and are essential for life. Chronic GC overexposure, called Cushing’s syndrome, is characterized by central obesity, muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and neurocognitive impairment. LÄS MER
13. Diagnosing hyper- and hypocortisolism using saliva samples : pitfalls and how to avoid them
Sammanfattning : Background: Cushing's syndrome (CS) is caused by high cortisol secretion whereas insufficient cortisol secretion is called adrenal insufficiency (AI). Both are rare diseases with substantial diagnostic delay, and high morbidity and mortality even though effective treatment is available. LÄS MER
14. Regulation of hyaluronan biosynthesis : Expression in vitro and importance for tumor progression
Sammanfattning : Hyaluronan, a component of the extracellular matrix, is synthesized by either of three hyaluronan-synthesizing enzymes termed Has1, Has2 and Has3. The expression level of each Has gene varies between cell types of mesenchymal origin and is differentially regulated in response to external stimuli. LÄS MER
15. The Round Window Membrane - Gateway to the Cochlea : A Morphological and Electrophysiological study
Sammanfattning : Topical treatment of several inner ear diseases through the round window membrane (RWM) might be feasible in the near future. Bacteria toxins, ototoxic drugs and noise trauma seem to harm the inner ear by a common pathway which involves, excessive outflow of the afferent neurotransmitter glutamate and formation of nitric oxide (NO), which can severely damage cells/nerve endings and lead to cell death.
