  1. 1. Neutrophils versus Pathogenic Fungi : through the magnifying glass of nutritional immunity

    Författare :Maria Joanna Niemiec; Constantin F. Urban; Bernhard Hube; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; Candida albicans; nutritional immunity; metallome; Zn; Fe;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are among the first white blood cells recruited to the site of infection once microbial pathogens enter the host organism. At site, they perform a well-orchestrated chain of processes that aims to kill the microbial invader. Most prominent, neutrophils engulf microbes to inactivate them intracellularly, a process called phagocytosis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Endotoxin-induced inflammation in healthy human airways

    Författare :Margaretha E. Smith; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LPS; neutrophils; bronchoalveolar lavage; human airways; innate immunity;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the innate immune response in healthy human airways in vivo after simulation of a Gram-negative infection. Intrabronchial exposure to the TLR4 agonist endotoxin was used as a model for the innate mechanisms in the immune response that are caused by cigarette smoke and by natural infection with Gram-negative bacteria. 3. 3. Pathogenic Neisseria infections of human neutrophils and epithelial cells : focusing on host responses and immune evasion

    Författare :Niklas Söderholm; Helena Aro; Thomas Rudel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neisseria meningitidis; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Neutrophils; PMN; Epithelial cells; Polarized cells; Type IV pili; Adherence; Cell cycle; DNA damage; Lactobacillus; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae are obligate human pathogens that colonize mucosal surfaces and are often carried asymptomatically. These bacteria have developed adhesive structures that promote adherence to host cells and efficient colonization of new hosts. LÄS MER

  4. 4. ß2 integrin-induced signal transduction events in human neutrophils

    Författare :Fredrik Melander; Malmö Experimentell patologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; integrins; signal transduction; Rho GTPases; kinases; c-Cbl; General pathology; patologisk anatomi; pathological anatomy; Patologi allmän ; neutrophils;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammation is a localized protective response in vascularized tissues and can be induced by microbial infection or cell and tissue injury. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the most common white blood cells and are recognized as major cellular mediators of acute inflammation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Recognition by leukocyte formyl peptide receptors. Promiscuous binding or pattern recognition?

    Författare :Johan Bylund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :neutrophils; chemoattractant; FPRL1; NADPH-oxidase; LPS; priming; subcellular organelles; human; murine;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophil granulocytes play an important role in the early stages of microbial infection. The neutrophils have to leave the blood stream and migrate out into the tissue where they phagocytose microbes and cell debris from damaged host tissues. LÄS MER
