1. The Heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme : From Proteomics to Energy Transfer
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to provide a thorough characterization of the photosynthetic machinery from the heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme strain ATCC 29133. In this thesis I describe the protocols I have optimized for the isolation of thylakoids from vegetative cells, the purification of heterocysts and the isolation of thylakoids from the purified heterocysts. 2. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : In the Himmerfjärden Bay a large excess of nitrogen over phosphorus in the discharge from a large sewage treatment plant (STP) has suppressed growth of diazotrophic cyanobacteria in its inner parts. Implementation of nitrogen removal in the STP in 1997 drastically reduced nitrogen load and triggered growth of diazotrophs, mainly Aphanizomenon sp. LÄS MER
3. Development of robust cyanobacterial strains for biotechnological applications : Stress tolerance and cell-specific expression in heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : Synthetic biology tools can be used to exploit potential applications of cyanobacteria, promising photosynthetic hosts for production of fuels and chemicals. Specific genetic tools are needed for the development of robust cyanobacterial strains for bioengineering. LÄS MER
4. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the study was to provide better insights to the ecological role and impact of cyanobacteria in Baltic Sea (BS) bay, coastal and open sea areas. Biomass and heterocyst development of diazotrophic, heterocystous cyanobacteria were monitored over several years simultaneously as physical parameters such as nutrients and temperature. LÄS MER
5. Developmental patterns in the Nostoc-Gunnera symbiosis
Sammanfattning : Gunneraceae is an angiosperm family comprising about 60 species scattered in the southern hemisphere. All members of the family develop a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with intracellularly located Nostoc. The aim of the present study was to characterize the symbiosis, structurally and physiologically, with emphasis on G. magellanica and G. LÄS MER
