  1. 1. Topographic Control of Groundwater Flow

    Författare :Lars Marklund; Anders Wörman; Shulan Xu; Roy Haggerty; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Groundwater; Modeling; Topography; Spectral analysis; Fourier series; Exact solu-tions; Multi-scale; Grundvatten; Modellering; Topografi; Spektralanalys; Fourier serier; Analytisk lösning; Flerskalig; Hydrology; Hydrologi; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Gravity is the main driving force for groundwater flow, and both landscape topography and geology distribute the effects of gravity on groundwater flow.  The groundwater table defines the distribution of the potential energy of the water. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Groundwater-Seawater Interactions : Seawater Intrusion, Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Temporal Variability and Randomness Effects

    Författare :Carmen Prieto; Georgia Destouni; Vassilios Kaleris; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydraulic engineering; Seawater intrusion; submarine groundwater discharge; coastal groundwater management; coastal zone management; temporal variability; temporal randomness; Vattenteknik; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Fresh groundwater quality and availability in coastal areas is affected by seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers, and coastal water quality and ecosystem status may be significantly affected by groundwater pollutants that are transported into coastal waters by submarine groundwater dis-charge (SGD). This thesis uses an overall regional perspective for investigating: i) seawater intru-sion and its possible control in sustainable coastal groundwater management; ii) SGD and its relevant quantification as one interacting part among the diverse main regional pathways of freshwater and tracer/pollutant inputs from land to sea; and iii) the integrated system functioning of both i) and ii) as main components of the same coastal groundwater system. 3. 3. Permafrost Groundwater Dynamics : Modeling of vertical and lateral flows in the active layer across multiple scales

    Författare :Alexandra Hamm; Andrew Frampton; Peter Kuhry; Jeffrey McKenzie; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; permafrost; climate change; numerical modeling; hydrogeology; groundwater; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : Hydrological processes in the Arctic are profoundly influenced by the presence of permanently frozen ground, known as permafrost. Conversely, permafrost is greatly affected by hydrological changes resulting from climate change. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Water and Heat Transport in Road Structures : Development of Mechanistic Models

    Författare :Klas Hansson; Lars-Christer Lundin; Kurt Roth; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrology; Water flow; Heat flow; Unsaturated flow; Freeze-thaw; Numerical models; Uncertainty analysis; Sensitivity analysis; Roads; Overland flow; Flow patterns; TDR; Water content reflectometer; Calibration; Fractures; Hydrologi; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Sammanfattning : The coupled transport of water and heat, involving freezing and thawing, in the road structure and its immediate environment is important to consider for optimal design and maintenance of roads and when assessing solute transport, of e.g. de-icing salt, from roads. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Secondary currents in groundwater

    Författare :Maria Engström; Bo Nordell; Anders Sellgren; Clifford Voss; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Groundwater; Vattenteknik; Water Resources Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis concerns the small vertical water movements created by thermal convection and the Coriolis force acting on groundwater flows. These small flows are of importance to vertical transports of temperature, nutrients and contaminants that would not be spread in the way they are. LÄS MER
