1. Studies of Autoantibodies in Systemic and Organ-Specific Autoimmune Disease
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the prototypic systemic autoimmune disease, whereas autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS1) is a rare autosomal disorder characterized by combinations of organ-specific autoimmune manifestations including hypoparathyroidism and intestinal dysfunction, and may serve as a model for organ-specific autoimmunity. Autoantibodies directed against proteins expressed in the affected tissues are found in both diseases. LÄS MER
2. Autoantibodies as markers of beta-cell autoimmunity in children
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic disease caused by destruction of the insulin producing beta-cells in the pancreas. The incidence of T1D has increased rapidly, especially in the Western world and among young children. LÄS MER
3. Organ-specific autoantibodies in Addison's disease and autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type I
Sammanfattning : Assessment of autoantibodies is a valuable tool in the diagnostic procedure of autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of different autoantibodies and their associations with disease manifestations in patients with Addison's disease and autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type I (APS I). 4. Immunogenetics of Childhood Type 1 Diabetes in Immigrant Patients in Sweden. Migration Studies on Type 1 Diabetes
Sammanfattning : This thesis examined whether the offspring of immigrants (non-Swedes) to Sweden are at increased risk of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when they are born or live in Sweden. It also evaluated if their T1D and T2D-related genes differed from Swedish patients and whether this genetic heritage determined the types and existence of islet autoantibodies at time of diagnosis and affected the classification of diabetes. 5. Immunoregulatory differences between adult onset type 1 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)
Sammanfattning : Autoimmune diabetes is characterized by cell mediated autoimmunity against insulin producing beta cells in pancreatic islets. Type 1 diabetes is the major cause of diabetes in children and adolescents and is believed to be mediated by a Thl driven destruction of beta cells. LÄS MER
