1. Functional Traits in Sphagnum
Sammanfattning : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 2. Functional Ceramics in Biomedical Applications : On the Use of Ceramics for Controlled Drug Release and Targeted Cell Stimulation
Sammanfattning : Ceramics are distinguished from metals and polymers by their inorganic nature and lack of metallic properties. They can be highly crystalline to amorphous, and their physical and chemical properties can vary widely. LÄS MER
3. Modeling Specialization and Division of Labor in Cultural Evolution
Sammanfattning : Division of labor and division of knowledge are so important and common in society today that it is difficult to imagine a functional society where everyone knows the same things and performs the same tasks. In such a society everyone grows, or gathers, and prepares their own food, makes their own tools, builds their own house, and so on. LÄS MER
4. Hidden Diversity Revealed : Genomic, Transcriptomic and Functional Studies of Diplomonads
Sammanfattning : The diplomonads are a diverse group of eukaryotic microbes found in oxygen limited environments such as the intestine of animals were they may cause severe disease. Among them, the prominent human parasite Giardia intestinalis non-invasively colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals where it induces the gastrointestinal disease giardiasis. LÄS MER
5. Functional Aspects of Cranial Implants : Mechanical and Regenerative Properties
Sammanfattning : In several neurosurgical procedures, the skull must be temporarily opened. The resulting bone defect can subsequently be reconstructed with a cranial implant. However, the complication rate of this surgical procedure is high (~20%). The most common complication for cranial implants is infection. LÄS MER
