1. Brain characteristics of memory decline and stability in aging : Contributions from longitudinal observations
Sammanfattning : Aging is typically associated with declining mental abilities, most prominent for some forms of memory. There are, however, large inter-individual differences within the older population. Some people experience rapid decline whereas others seem almost spared from any adverse effects of aging. LÄS MER
2. Differential effects of voluntary running on hippocampal plasticity in the adult rat brain
Sammanfattning : The continuation of neuronal birth from dividing neural stem cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus throughout adulthood is known to play an important role in maintaining normal hippocampal function, such as memory and learning. Negative alterations in the levels of adult neurogenesis have also been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer s disease and mood disorders such as depression. LÄS MER
3. Episodic memory in the human prefrontal cortex
Sammanfattning : This thesis consisting of five papers examines the relationship between haemodynamic activation in the prefrontal cortex with episodic memory function in the healthy human brain. Brain function is measured with positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) and episodic memory for words as well as visuo-spatial material is examined. 4. Perceived Self-image, Intellectual Ability, Frontal Lobe Function, and Perceived Ward Atmosphere among Patients with Psychosis
Sammanfattning : These studies were conducted at the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit (PRU), characterised by a supportive ego-strenghtening psychodynamic approach. The general aim of the thesis was to study how intellectual ability and perceived self-image were related to perceived ward atmosphere among patients with psychosis. LÄS MER
5. The conscious brain : Empirical investigations of the neural correlates of perceptual awareness
Sammanfattning : Although consciousness has been studied since ancient time, how the brain implements consciousness is still considered a great mystery by most. This thesis investigates the neural correlates of consciousness by measuring brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while specific contents of consciousness are defined and maintained in various experimental settings.
