2. On the Multi-Scale Nature of Ski-Snow Friction : Field Testing, Characterisation and Modelling of Cross-Country Ski Performance
Sammanfattning : The goal of most endurance sports is to get from point A to B in the shortest time possible. Throughout the course, athletes need to overcome the resistive forces that are present in their specific sport. LÄS MER
3. Nature-inspired passive flow control using various coatings and appendages
Sammanfattning : There is a wide variety of tails, fins, scales, riblets and surface coatings, which are used by motile animals in nature. Since organisms currently living on earth have gone through millions of years of evolution, one can expect that their design is optimal for their tasks, including locomotion. LÄS MER
4. Measurements and Prediction of Friction Drag of Rough Surfaces
Sammanfattning : Owing to the increased sea transportation of goods, the environmental impacts of this activity are becoming more and more important, since a ship experiences resistance that directly affects its performance and fuel consumption. The growth of marine organisms (fouling) on ship hulls increases the roughness of the hull surface, which in turn causes a rise in ship resistance with a consequent increase in fuel consumption and greenhouse emissions of up to 40%. 5. Flow over rough surfaces, and conjugate heat transfer, in engineering applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on two important topics in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer that were treated separately. On the one hand, the flow over rough surfaces, which is not yet completely understood, despite of the fact that it has an important implication in many engineering applications, especially in the naval industry for ships and boats because the friction drag caused by fouling, antifouling coatings and roughness in general impacts the fuel consumption and toxic emissions to the atmosphere.
