1. Regulators of Membrane Fluidity
Sammanfattning : Caenorhabditis elegans PAQR-2 (a homolog of the mammalian AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 proteins) and IGLR-2 (homolog of the mammalian LRIG proteins) form a complex at the plasma membrane that regulates fatty acid desaturation to protect against saturated fatty acid-induced membrane rigidification. Maintenance of membrane homeostasis is fundamental for most cellular processes and, given its importance, robust regulatory mechanisms must exist that adjust lipid composition to compensate for dietary variation. 2. Membrane Fluidity Regulation: From C. elegans to mammalian cells
Sammanfattning : Biological membranes are primarily an assembly of lipids and proteins. Collectively, these constituents within a phospholipid bilayer determine the physical membrane properties such as fluidity, viscosity, thickness, packing and permeability. Maintenance of membrane properties within acceptable margins, i.e. LÄS MER
3. Process development for investment casting of thin-walled components : Manufacturing of light weight components
Sammanfattning : Manufacturing processes are getting more and more complex with increasing demands of advanced and light weight engineering components, especially in aerospace industry. The global requirements on lower fuel consumption and emissions are increasing the demands in lowering weight of cast components. LÄS MER
4. Foreign molecules in biomembranes : Molecular effects on intact stratum corneum and model lipid systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis mainly explores how the molecular mobility of lipid and protein components in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), varies with different conditions and upon adding foreign compounds. These studies require methods that makes it possible to detect and characterize the minor amount of fluid components in the highly ordered solid SC sample with resolved molecular information. LÄS MER
5. Fluorescence fluctuation studies of biomolecular interactions in solutions, biomembranes and live cells
Sammanfattning : Fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging have a very broad spectrum of applicationswithin the life sciences, in particular for detection and characterization ofbiomolecular dynamics and interactions in different environments. This thesis comprisesprojects that strive to further expand the information content extracted fromthe detected fluorescence, leading to sensitive readout parameters for studies ofbiomolecular dynamics and interactions.
