1. Glucose metabolism in patients with exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Sammanfattning : Carc.inoma of the exocrine pancreas is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the Western world and the survival rate is one of the lowest for cancers of any site. Pancreatic cancer is characterized by pronounced, early cachexia and frequent metabolic complications. LÄS MER
2. The Kidney in Different Stages of the Cardiovascular Continuum
Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic kidney disease are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The complex, interaction between the kidney and the cardiovascular system is incompletely understood, particularly at the early stages of the cardiovascular continuum. LÄS MER
3. Insulin-antagonistic neurohormonal pathways in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : According to the current paradigm, the development of type 2 diabetes is driven by insulin resistance and the gradual failure of beta cells to compensate for this by secreting adequate amounts of insulin. Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is considered to influence disease development primarily by induction of insulin resistance, via mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated. 4. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 5. Studies on the links between white adipose tissue phenotype and the circulatory system
Sammanfattning : Obesity is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is defined by an unhealthy excess of white adipose tissue (WAT). Adipose derived weight gains and losses are linked to changes in two other independent cardiovascular risk factors: hypertension, and arterial stiffness. LÄS MER
