  1. 1. Managing high environmental performance? : Applying life cycle approaches and environmental certification tools in the building and real estate sectors

    Författare :Nils W. O. Brown; Tove Malmqvist; Peter Guthrie; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Buildings; operational energy use; life cycle assessment; environmental certification; environmental assessment; renovation; strategy; design process; value creation; embodied environmental impacts; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis is  to demonstrate and critically assess life cycle approaches’ and environmental certification (EC) tools’ potential for supporting decisions for improved environmental performance in the building and real estate sectors.Using life cycle approaches, the thesis shows that for new build and renovation cases aiming for low operational energy use that embodied global warming potential (GWP) due to material production can constitute a large portion of a building’s lifetime GWP. 2. 2. Felling Forests from Afar: Quantifying Deforestation Driven by Agricultural Expansion and International Trade

    Författare :Florence Pendrill; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Forest transitions; Land cover; Carbon footprints; Agriculture; Forestry; Carbon emissions; Land use; International trade; Deforestation;

    Sammanfattning : Deforestation is a major source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and the largest threat to terrestrial biodiversity. Most forest loss is due to the expansion of agricultural land use increasingly driven by international demand for food, fuel and fibre. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Decision support for the implementation of low-carbon measures in the building sector

    Författare :Nicolas Francart; Tove Malmqvist; Paula Femenias; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; building; sustainability; environmental performance assessment; life cycle assessment; decision making; byggnad; hållbarhet; miljöprestandabedömning; livscykelanalys; beslutsstöd; Strategier för hållbar utveckling; Strategies for sustainable development;

    Sammanfattning : The building sector is responsible for about a fifth to a third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, a successful mitigation of GHG emissions over the entire life cycle of buildings is particularly important to achieve climate targets such as the Paris Agreement. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Timber as a forest-risk commodity: embodied socio-ecological impacts in the Brazilian supply chain

    Författare :Caroline Sartorato Silva Franca; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Environmentally-extended input-output model; Land use; Supply chain traceability; Forest frontiers; Sustainable Forest Management SFM ; Forest degradation; Illegal logging;

    Sammanfattning : The continued loss and degradation of forest resources is one of the largest sustainability challenges of our time. The past decades rise in global demand for agricultural and forest commodities have created unparalleled pressure on the natural resources, leading to forest destruction and associated loss in carbon stocks, invaluable biodiversity, ecosystems services, livelihoods. 5. 5. Energy Embodied in Trade, 1970–2014

    Författare :Viktoras Kulionis; Ekonomisk-historiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Economic Growth; Energy use; Trade; Footprint; Carbon Emissions; Input-Output Analysis; Structural Decomposition Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : Ongoing globalisation combined with the rapid pace of technological change have generated significant growth in economic activities and have improved the welfare and living standards of many people around the world. e opening up of the world economy has also led to unprecedented surges in international trade and has fundamentally transformed the way that goods and services are produced, exchanged and consumed.
