  1. 1. Competitive performance prediction of elite alpine skiers

    Författare :Robert Nilsson; Christer B. Malm; Apostolos Theos; Ann-Sofie Lindberg; Richard A. Ferguson; Örjan Ekblom; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Competitive performance; FIS points; alpine skiing; alpine skiers; physiological test results; anthropometric variables; multivariate data analysis; multivariate statistics; principal component analysis; orthogonal projections to latent structures; individual profiling; Sports Medicine; idrottsmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: The overall aim of this doctoral thesis was to identify physiological and anthropometric variables valid for prediction of competitive performance in alpine skiing (indicated by FIS points).Method: Paper I-III in this doctoral thesis followed an experimental, hypothesis-generating design which included both junior and senior elite alpine skiers. 2. 2. Prevalence and incidence of and risk factors for asthma and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction in elite endurance athletes

    Författare :Tommie Irewall; Nikolai Stenfors; Anne Lindberg; Estelle Naumburg; James Hull; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; asthma; exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction; EILO; continuous laryngoscopy during exercise test; CLE; prevalence; risk factors; incidence; athletes; skiers; endurance athletes; Sports Medicine; idrottsmedicin; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Asthma is highly prevalent in endurance athletes, but we lack up-to-date information on the prevalence and incidence of asthma in cross-country skiers. Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) is an important differential diagnosis to exercise-induced asthma, and its symptoms can mimic asthma. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The importance of body-mass exponent optimization for evaluation of performance capability in cross-country skiing

    Författare :Tomas Carlsson; Michail Tonkonogi; Christer Malm; Klavs Madsen; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allometric scaling; power-function modelling; maximal oxygen uptake; body mass; elite skiers; distance skiing; lactate threshold; double poling; sprint skiing; competition; power output; time trial; Hälsa och välfärd; Health and Welfare;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction Performance in cross-country skiing is influenced by the skier’s ability to continuously produce propelling forces and force magnitude in relation to the net external forces. A surrogate indicator of the “power supply” in cross-country skiing would be a physiological variable that reflects an important performance-related capability, whereas the body mass itself is an indicator of the “power demand” experienced by the skier. 4. 4. Cold air, physical activity, and the airways : epidemiological and experimental studies

    Författare :Linda Eklund; Nikolai Stenfors; Anne Lindberg; Thomas Sandström; Rita Sjöström; Leif Bjermer; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; asthma; asthma medication; athletes; cold temperature; environmental chamber; epidemiology; healthy; orienteers; physical activity; respiratory symptoms; risk factors; skiers; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Cold exposure is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Elite cross-country skiers are regularly exposed to cold, dry air and have a high prevalence of asthma compared to the Swedish population. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physiological demands of competitive elite cross-country skiing

    Författare :Magnus Carlsson; Michail Tonkonogi; Christer Malm; Eva Andersson; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Performance capability; maximal oxygen uptake; lactate threshold; lean mass; double poling; power output; maximal speed; sprint skiing; distance skiing.; Hälsa och välfärd; Health and Welfare;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction Researchers have, for decades, contributed to an increased collective understanding of the physiological demands in cross-country skiing; however, almost all of these studies have used either non-elite subjects and/or performances that emulate cross-country skiing. To establish the physiological demands of cross-country skiing, it is important to relate the investigated physiological variables to the competitive performance of elite skiers. LÄS MER
