1. Comparative network analysis of human cancer: sparse graphical models with modular constraints and sample size correction
Sammanfattning : In the study of transcriptional data for different groups (e.g. cancer types) it's reasonable to assume that some dependencies between genes on a transcriptional or genetic variants level are common across groups. Also, that this property is preserved locally, thus defining a modular structure in the model networks. LÄS MER
2. Network models with applications to genomic data: generalization, validation and uncertainty assessment
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to provide a framework for the estimation and analysis of transcription networks in human cancer. The methods we develop are applied to data collected by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and supporting simulations are based on derived models in order to reflect real data structure. LÄS MER
3. Mechanisms of adaptation in a mechanoreceptor : a study of mechanical and ionic factors in the crayfish stretch receptors
Sammanfattning : The stretch receptor organ of the crayfish, an analog to the human muscle spindle, is a unique preparation for the study of mechanotransduction. The organ consists of a rapidly and a slowly adapting receptor each composed of a receptor muscle fibre into which inserts the dendrites of a multipolar sensory neuron. LÄS MER
4. Atomic force microscopic studies of inner ear structure and mechanics
Sammanfattning : The transduction processes occurring in the inner ear, from sound induced vibration or head movements to nerve impulses sent to the brain, are to a large part dependent on the mechanical properties of the different components of this organ, especially the sensory hair cells. The function of the hearing organ is for example dependent on the unique mechanoelectric transduction properties of the cochlear outer hair cells (OHCs), which are able to respond to electrophysiological and mechanical stimulations by changing their shape and their mechanical properties. 5. Vascular function in bicuspid aortic valve disease
Sammanfattning : The aortic valve normally consists of three cusps (tricuspid aortic valve, TAV), but in 0.5-2% of the population it consists of only two cusps (bicuspid aortic valve, BAV), which is the most common congenital cardiac malformation. LÄS MER
