1. The density of rational points and invariants of genus one curves
Sammanfattning : The present thesis contains three papers dealing with two arithmetic problems on curves of genus one, which are closely related to elliptic curves. The first problem is to study the density of rational points presented in Papers I and II. LÄS MER
2. Misclassification Probabilities through Edgeworth-type Expansion for the Distribution of the Maximum Likelihood based Discriminant Function
Sammanfattning : This thesis covers misclassification probabilities via an Edgeworth-type expansion of the maximum likelihood based discriminant function. When deriving misclassification errors, first the expectation and variance in the population are assumed to be known where the variance is the same across populations and thereafter we consider the case where those parameters are unknown. 3. Tropical aspects of real polynomials and hypergeometric functions
Sammanfattning : The present thesis has three main topics: geometry of coamoebas, hypergeometric functions, and geometry of zeros.First, we study the coamoeba of a Laurent polynomial f in n complex variables. We define a simpler object, which we call the lopsided coamoeba, and associate to the lopsided coamoeba an order map. LÄS MER
4. Topics in polynomial sequences defined by linear recurrences
Sammanfattning : This licentiate consists of two papers treating polynomial sequences defined by linear recurrences. In paper I, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the reality of all the zeros in a polynomial sequence {P_i} generated by a three-term recurrence relation P_i(x)+ Q_1(x)P_{i-1}(x) +Q_2(x) P_{i-2}(x)=0 with the standard initial conditions P_{0}(x)=1, P_{-1}(x)=0, where Q_1(x) and Q_2(x) are arbitrary real polynomials. 5. Amoebas, Discriminants, and Hypergeometric Functions
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of six chapters. In Chapter 1 we give some historical background to the topic of the thesis together with the fundamental definitions and results that the thesis is based on. In Chapter 2 we study Mellin transforms of rational functions and investigate their analytic continuations. LÄS MER
