11. Lipid sponge phase nanostructures as carriers for enzymes
Sammanfattning : Nonlamellar lipid liquid crystalline phases have many potential applications, such as for drug delivery, protein encapsulation or crystallization. Lipid liquid crystalline sponge phase (L3) has so far not been very much considered in these applications, in spite of apparent advantages in terms of its flexibility and capacity of forming large aqueous pores able to encapsulate large bioactive molecules. 12. Controlling DNA compaction and the interaction with model biomembranes
Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis forms part of a larger collaborative project, Neonuclei, with the objective to design a module for packaging the negatively charged DNA into a ”neonucleus” with transcription competence. There are many applications that require control of DNA compaction, i.e. packaging or condensation. LÄS MER
13. Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies of the Binding of DNA to Cationic Liposomes
Sammanfattning : The objective of this work was to study the formation of DNA-cationic vesicle complexes (lipoplexes). These complexes are interesting not only from a fundamental point of view but also as promising candidates for gene therapy. The approach taken was to study first the cationic vesicles by themselves. 14. Structural Changes in Nonionic Surfactant Systems
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we have studied structural changes of a nonionic surfactant self-assembly, as governed by changes in temperature and concentration. The techniques used in experimental investigations were dynamic and static light scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (using a novel specimen preparation protocol). 15. Bilayer Discs - Fundamental Investigations and Applications of Nanosized Membrane Models
Sammanfattning : The bilayer disc is a flat, lipid aggregate structure in the nanometre regime. It is composed of a bilayer of amphiphilic molecules with micelle-forming amphiphilic molecules supporting the rim, which prevent disc fusion and self-closure. LÄS MER
