3. The Physical Foundation of the Patterning of Physical Action Verbs : A Study of Chinese Verbs
Sammanfattning : This work is a study of verbal semantics with a focus on the discussion and illustration of the role of body parts and the semantic incorporation into verbal roots of the actions that involve various body parts. Following a general discussion of the basic issues of language construction and human body actions with the image schemas of force-dynamics presented in line with the framework of cognitive semantics, it is argued that the event structures of physical action verbs are not arbitrarily constructed but rather the constructions are built through systematic cognitive processes in relation to both human physical reality and concrete reality in the world. Sammanfattning : This study investigates the Low German variety of Pomerano spoken by descendants of settlers who arrived in Brazil around 1860–1880 from the European region of Pomerania. The focus of this linguistic study is on existential constructions (Existenzverbkonstruktionen – EVK), which are used to express “existence” (Es gibt einen Gott) or an ingressive status of “coming into existence” (Es gibt ein Fest). 5. A typology of comparatives in Sinitic : grammaticalization, patterns and language contact
Sammanfattning : This dissertation offers a window on the grammatical diversity of Chinese languages, hereafter referred to as Sinitic. It focuses in particular on comparative constructions of southern varieties such as Cantonese, Minnan and Hakka and compares these to northern Mandarin as well as some non- Sinitic languages of Southeast Asia.
