1. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. 2. Regulation of Tissue Factor and Coagulation Activity : Translation Studies with Focus on Platelet-Monocyte Aggregates and Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome
Sammanfattning : Myocardial infarction (MI) is often caused by a disruption of an atherosclerotic plaque with activation of coagulation, platelets and inflammation. The aims were; to investigate whether the oral direct thrombin inhibitor, ximelagatran affected markers for coagulation, platelet and inflammation in a patient cohort with recent MI and if the coagulation markers could identify patients with increased risk of new ischemic events; to evaluate some of the mechanisms involved in formation of platelet-monocyte aggregates (PMAs). 3. Contact activation on bacterial surfaces - a virulence mechanism
Sammanfattning : Life-threatening conditions from bacterial infections are a major clinical problem. During a severe infection, the host responds by a massive release of pro-inflammatory mediators together with a systemic activation of systems such as the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement systems. 4. The Plasma Contact System : New Functional Insights from a Hemostatic and Thrombotic Perspective
Sammanfattning : The physiological role of the plasma contact system still remains a partial enigma. The aim of the presented work was to expand our understanding of the plasma contact system, focusing on its physiological activation and function, principally from a hemostatic perspective. It also explored contact system activation under pathological conditions. LÄS MER
5. Mechanisms and Therapeutic Interventions of Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction (IBMIR)
Sammanfattning : Intraportal transplantation of isolated islets of Langerhans is a procedure approaching clinical acceptance as a treatment for patients with type I diabetes mellitus. One major problem with this treatment is that large amounts of cells are lost at the time of infusion into the portal vein, resulting in a low level of engraftment of the islets. LÄS MER
