Sammanfattning : Obesity is a major health epidemic worldwide and occurs when long-term excess of energy intake beyond energy utilization leads to an increase in adipose tissue. Energy balance is coordinated by the central nervous system regulation of appetite and adaptive thermogenesis via a complex array of neuropeptides which communicate to the periphery by various circulating measures dictating the utilization of various energy sources such as, carbohydrates, fat, or protein. 2. Mind in Action : Action Representation and the Perception of Biological Motion
Sammanfattning : The ability to understand and communicate about the actions of others is a fundamental aspect of our daily activity. How can we talk about what others are doing? What qualities do different actions have such that they cause us to see them as being different or similar? What is the connection between what we see and the development of concepts and words or expressions for the things that we see? To what extent can two different people see and talk about the same things? Is there a common basis for our perception, and is there then a common basis for the concepts we form and the way in which the concepts become lexicalized in language? The broad purpose of this thesis is to relate aspects of perception, categorization and language to action recognition and conceptualization. LÄS MER

4. Effects of peripheral auditory adaptation on the discrimination of speech sounds
Sammanfattning : This study investigates perceptual effects of discharge rate adaptation in the auditory-nerve fibers. Discrimination tests showed that brief synthetic stimuli with stationary formants and periodic source were better discriminated when they had an abrupt as opposed to a gradual onset (non-adapted vs adapted condition). Sammanfattning : This thesis investigated whether vocal emotion expressions are conveyed as discrete emotions or as continuous dimensions.
