  1. 1. Experimental Studies Aiming to Prevent Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Författare :Tobias Rydgren; Stellan Sandler; Nils Welsh; Adrian Bone; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; Diabetes; Interleukin-1 trap; Simvastatin; Nitric oxide synthase; Cytokine; Pancreatic islet; Streptozotocin; Transplantation; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease in which T-cells and macrophages invade the islets of Langerhans and selectively destroy the insulin producing β-cells, either directly or through the secretion of e.g. cytokines and nitric oxide (NO). This thesis has studied possible strategies to prevent T1DM. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Effects of Interleukin-4 and Interleukin-13 on Bone

    Författare :Carl-Johan Silfverswärd; Olle Nilsson; Östen Ljunggren; Kenneth Jonsson; Li Felländer-Tsai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicine; Bone; Osteoblasts; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-13; Knockout; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Cytokines play important roles in bone metabolism, participating in the complex interplay necessary for normal bone formation and turnover. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the effects of two anti-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13) on bone. LÄS MER

  3. 3. A prospective chohort study on bone formation and bone loss in ankylosing spondylitis

    Författare :Anna Deminger; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ankylosing spondylitis; bone mineral density; spinal new bone formation; longitudinal cohort study;

    Sammanfattning : Background and objectives: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have an increased risk of bone loss with development of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures (VFs) but also spinal new bone formation with growth of bony spurs (syndesmophytes) between the vertebrae. Measurements of spinal bone mineral density (BMD) by the routine method dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in anteroposterior (AP) projection can be difficult to interpret due to the spinal new bone formation. 4. 4. Effects of antiresorptive agents on inflammation and bone regeneration in different osseous sites - experimental and clinical studies

    Författare :Carina Cardemil; Peter Thomsen; Cecilia Larsson Wexell; Bente Brokstad Herlofson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Qntiresorptive agents; ovariectomised rat; osteoporosis; skeletal site; differences osteonecrosis of the jaw; osseointegration; bone substitute; inflammation; bone regeneration; gene expression; histomorphometry; Micro-CT; antiresorptive agents; ovariectomised rat; osteoporosis; skeletal site differences; osteonecrosis of the jaw; osseointegration; bone substitute; inflammation; bone regeneration; gene expression; histomorphometry; Micro-CT;

    Sammanfattning : The biological mechanisms involved in bone regeneration in osteoporotic bone and the effect of antiresorptive drugs in relation to surgically inserted biomaterials are not fully understood. Improved osseointegration of titanium implants but also adverse effects of antiresorptive therapies, such as osteonecrotic jaw have been described in the literature. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Kinins : important regulators in inflammation induced bone resorption

    Författare :Anna Bernhold Brechter; Ulf Lerner; Hans-Erik Claesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Bone resorption; Osteoblasts; Kinins; B1 and B2 receptors; IL-1β; TNF-α; Prostaglandin; COX-2; RANKL; Transcription factors; IL-4; IL-13; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammatory processes in, or in close vicinity of, the skeleton often lead to loss of bone tissue. Different cytokines have been shown to be involved as stimulators of inflammatory induced osteoclastic bone resorption. LÄS MER
