1. Gender and representation : investigations of bias in natural language processing
Sammanfattning : Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies are a part of our every day realities. They come in forms we can easily see as ‘language technologies’ (auto-correct, translation services, search results) as well as those that fly under our radar (social media algorithms, 'suggested reading' recommendations on news sites, spam filters). 2. Extreme Electron Beams and Brilliant X-rays : Generation, Manipulation and Characterization of Relativistic Electron Beams for and from Plasma-Based Accelerators
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on work done by the author on the development of plasma-based electron accelerators driven by ultra-intense laser pulses and dense electron bunches. Plasma based accelerators have several benefits, such as accelerating fields around 1000 times stronger than in “conventional” radio-frequency accelerators, which can allow for shrinking the overall footprint of the accelerator. 3. Algorithmic Bounds for Presumably Hard Combinatorial Problems
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we present new worst case computational bounds on algorithms for some of the most well-known NP-complete and #P-complete problems and their optimization variants. We consider graph problems like Longest Path, Maximum Cut, Number of Perfect Matchings, Chromatic and Domatic Number, as well as Maximum k-Satisfiability and Set Cover. LÄS MER
4. Approximating Longest Path
Sammanfattning : We investigate the computational hardness of approximating the longest path and the longest cycle in undirected and directed graphs on n vertices. We show that * in any expander graph, we can find (n) long paths in polynomial time. LÄS MER
5. Effects of over-stimulation by glucose on pancreatic beta-cell functioning : studies in vitro with diazoxide
Sammanfattning : Long term hyperglycemia impairs pancreatic ß-cell function. In vivo studies in rats have shown a decreased glucose-induced insulin response in the perfused pancreas after high glucose infusions. LÄS MER
