  1. 1. Birth and Death Processes in Random Environments

    Författare :Henrik Nyberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis treats birth and death processes in random environments. They are modelled by Markov processes in Z+2, where the first component represents the object of interest, the "birth and death process", and the second component represents the random environment which is assumed to be a time homogeneous Markov process in its own right. 2. 2. Probabilistic Programming for Birth-Death Models of Evolution

    Författare :Jan Kudlicka; Johannes Borgström; Thomas B. Schön; Lawrence M. Murray; Bret Larget; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; probabilistic programming; birth-death models; statistical phylogenetics; particle filters; sequential Monte Carlo SMC ; Computer Science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic birth-death models constitute a family of generative models of evolution. In these models an evolutionary process starts with a single species at a certain time in the past, and the speciations—splitting one species into two descendant species—and extinctions are modeled as events of non-homogenous Poisson processes. 3. 3. Using Trees to Capture Reticulate Evolution : Lateral Gene Transfers and Cancer Progression

    Författare :Ali Tofigh; Jens Lagergren; Mike Steel; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lateral Gene Tranfer; Horizontal Gene Transfer; Cancer Progression; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Computer science; Datalogi;

    Sammanfattning : The historic relationship of species and genes are traditionally depicted using trees. However, not all evolutionary histories are adequately captured by bifurcating processes and an increasing amount of research is devoted towards using networks or network-like structures to capture evolutionary history. 4. 4. I ritens rum - om mötet mellan tyg och människa : In a Room of Rites – Cloth Meeting Human

    Författare :Birgitta Nordström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; textile art; weaving; craft; practical knowledge; ritual; death; birth; funeral; funeral pall; mourning process; comfort;

    Sammanfattning : The project In a Room of Rites – Cloth Meeting Human is an artistic research project on textiles, rites and death, where I create textile art in the form of a funeral pall (in the artwork: Kortedalakrönika (Kortedala Chronicle) and infant wrapping cloths (in the artwork: I sin linda/Wrapped in Cloth). The initial aim of the project is to explore what textiles can mean at farewells and in funeral rituals, as well as to reflect on the experiences I gain in my art making. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Two-Barrier Problems in Applied Probability: Algorithms and Analysis

    Författare :Mats Pihlsgård; Matematisk statistik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistics; operations research; programming; actuarial mathematics; Statistik; Matematik; Mathematics; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; Reflection; Stochastic processes; Applied probability; Queueing; operationsanalys; programmering; aktuariematematik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five papers (A-E). In Paper A, we study transient properties of the queue length process in various queueing settings. We focus on computing the mean and the Laplace transform of the time required for the queue length starting at $x0. We define the loss rate due to the reflection. LÄS MER
