1. Patterns and Processes of Evolution in Sundaland
Sammanfattning : Biodiversity in the tropics is disproportionately high compared to other habitats, and also under disproportionate threat from human impact. It is necessary to understand how this diversity evolved and how it is partitioned across space in order to preserve it. LÄS MER
2. Methyltransferase Ash1, histone methylation and their impact on Polycomb repression
Sammanfattning : Antagonistic interactions between Polycomb Group (PcG) and Trithorax Group (TrxG) proteins orchestrate the expression of key developmental genes. Distinct maternally loaded repressors establish the silenced state of these genes in cells where they should not be expressed and later PcG proteins sense whether a target gene is inactive and maintain the repression throughout multiple cell divisions. 3. Transcriptional biomarkers of toxicity – powerful tools or random noise? : An applied perspective from studies on bivalves
Sammanfattning : Aquatic organisms are constantly at risk of being exposed to potentially harmful chemical compounds of natural or anthropogenic origin. Biological life can for instance respond to chemical stressors by changes in gene expression, and thus, certain gene transcripts can potentially function as biomarkers, i.e. LÄS MER
4. Exploring phenomena that affect the fate and impact of radioactive materials in the blue mussel
Sammanfattning : Current protection of the marine environment from radiation is based largely on measuring, estimating and modelling accumulation and impact(s) of radionuclides in a few marine species. Using a relevant marine organism, this thesis focusses on investigating some poorly described phenomena that could cause deviations from predicted measurements. LÄS MER
5. Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19
Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients.
