1. Insulin resistance, genetic variation and cytokines : associations to myocardial infarction risk
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance, inflammation and associated genes are considered as factors of potential importance for the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, but their relationship to myocardial infarction (MI) and associated risk factors remains unclear. In the present thesis, insulin resistance and serum levels as well as genetic variants of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), were investigated in the population-based study "the Stockholm heart epidemiological program" (SHEEP) (n=5452). 2. Novel insights into the role of serotonin in control of β-cell fuction
Sammanfattning : Inadequate insulin secretion is a central component in the development of Diabetes Mellitus, resulting from reduced pancreatic β-cell mass, as well as diminished β-cell function. Islet produced 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) is suggested to regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass in rodents during pregnancy and in metabolically challenged states. LÄS MER
3. Erythema Migrans in Primary Health Care
Sammanfattning : Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common vector-borne disease in the northern hemisphere, and southern Sweden is a highly endemic area. In over 70% of the cases, LB is represented by the non-disseminated cutaneous form erythema migrans (EM). LÄS MER
4. Straffansvar vid atypiska sinnestillstånd
Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis examines the attribution of criminal responsibility in Swedish law in cases where the defendant committed an act during an atypical mental state, e.g. psychosis. In nearly all criminal justice systems, a severe mental disorder can activate special rules that excuse or exempt the defendant. LÄS MER
5. Isolated islets of Langerhans trigger an instant blood mediated inflammatory reaction : a finding with implications for intraportal islet transplantation
Sammanfattning : Islet transplantation offers a logical means to treat insulin-dependent diabetes. However, for reasons poorly understood, the clinical results with islet transplantation have been vastly inferior to those obtained with whole organ pancreas transplantation. LÄS MER
