  1. 1. Bacterial toxins for cancer treatment

    Författare :David Johansson; Parviz Behnam-Motlagh; Kjell Grankvist; Anders Johansson; Roger Henriksson; Bo Baldetorp; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alpha‐toxin; AC‐toxin; mesothelioma; lung cancer; glioma; breast cancer; caspases; MAP-Kinase; verotoxin‐1; cisplatin; apoptosis; Gb3; drug resistance; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Even though anti‐cancer chemotherapy has been continuously improved during the last decades. problems with adverse effects and drug resistance still constitutes a considerable obstacle and sets a demand for new effective treatment options. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The role of bacterial endotoxin in the immature brain

    Författare :Saskia Eklind; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :lipopolysaccharide; hypoxia-ischemia; immature; temperature; cerebral blood flow; blood glucose; inflammation; apoptosis; microarray; preconditioning;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: Epidemiological evidence suggests that infections may increase the vulnerability of the immature brain to further insults. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) on hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury in the immature rat brain, and to evaluate possible underlying mechanisms of increased sensitivity. 3. 3. Inflammatory Reactions in Peritonitis and Malignant Obstructive Jaundice : Clinical and Experimental Studies with Special Emphasis on the Cellular Immune Response

    Författare :Johanna Österberg; Ulf Haglund; Mikael Ljungdahl; Roland Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; CLP; sepsis; peritonitis; bacterial translocation; malignant obstructive jaundice; Linomide; COX inhibitor; SC-236; indometacin; T lymphocyte; macrophage; mucosa; MLN; gut immune cell distribution; mucosal injury; cytokines; TNF-α; IL-6; IL-10; endotoxin; caspase-3; apoptosis; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Patients with peritonitis or malignant obstructive jaundice (HPB+) have an increased morbidity and mortality due to sepsis. An altered cell-mediated immunity in the intestinal mucosa might promote gut barrier failure, increased endotoxin and cytokine release and bacterial translocation (BT) in these conditions. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Prokaryotic respiratory supercomplexes : Studies of interactions between complexes III and IV

    Författare :Olga Stah; Pia Ädelroth; Petra Hellwig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioenergetics; membrane protein; bacterial respiration; electron transport chain; supercomplex; cytochrome c oxidase; membrane-anchored cytochrome c; cytochrome bc1 complex; electron transfer; proton transfer; time-resolved spectroscopy; apoptosis; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Respiratory processes for cellular energy conversion are carried out by the membrane-associated enzymes of the electron transfer chain (ETC). In recent years there has been emerging data showing that the members of the ETC organize into higher-level assemblies called supercomplexes (SCs) whose functional relevance is not yet fully understood. 5. 5. Microbe-induced apoptosis in phagocytic cells and its role in innate immunity

    Författare :Robert Blomgran; Olle Stendahl; Limin Zheng; Boris Zhivotovsky; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; apoptosis; cell death; inflammation; innate immunity; microbiology; neutrophil; macrophage; phagocyte; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a controlled process by which aged or damages cells are eliminated in multicellular organisms. Neutrophils, short-lived phagocytes of the innate immune system, are highly equipped effectors that can sense, locate, ingest and kill bacterial pathogens. LÄS MER
