1. Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures
Sammanfattning : The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. LÄS MER
2. Axon Guidance and Morphogenesis of the C. elegans Pharynx
Sammanfattning : The C. elegans pharynx is a single cell thick muscular tube that undergoes morphogenesis to attain it mature structure from a ball of 80 undifferentiated cells. This thesis is about understanding the mechanisms and the genetic pathways underlying the process of pharyngeogenesis. LÄS MER
3. Spinal Control of Locomotion : Developmental and Functional Aspects
Sammanfattning : Neuronal networks are the central functional units of the nervous system. Knowledge about the identity of participating neurons and the assembly of these during development is crucial for the understanding of CNS function. LÄS MER
4. Molecular mechanisms of nerve-tumor interactions : the intersection of cancer and neurodevelopment
Sammanfattning : A wide range of cancers throughout the body are characterized by high nerve density and invasion of cancer cells within the nerves, a process called perineural invasion (PNI). Work in the field has shown that blocking nerves in organs with tumors leads to improved disease outcomes suggesting that finding ways to block tumor nerves could lead to new treatment approaches. 5. Machine Learning Techniques with Specific Application to the Early Olfactory System
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with machine learning techniques for the extraction of structure and the analysis of the vertebrate olfactory pathway based on related methods. Some of its main contributions are summarized below. LÄS MER
