  1. 1. New strategies and tools for Plasmodium falciparum case management and surveillance in the era of imminent resistance to artemisinin-based combination therapy in Tanzania

    Författare :Lwidiko E Mhamilawa; Andreas Mårtensson; Billy Ngasala; Ulrika Morris; Ib Christian Bygbjerg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; artemether-lumefantrine; drug resistance; Tanzania; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Artemether-lumefantrine has been an efficacious first line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Tanzania since its introduction in 2006. Interest has developed in understanding the observation of high residual PCR determined positivity rates on day 3 after supervised artemether-lumefantrine treatment in the magnitude of almost 30% in previous assessments from 2015 in Bagamoyo district, Tanzania. 2. 2. The role of molecular markers in emerging artemether-lumefantrine resistant Plasmodium falciparum

    Författare :Maja Malmberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria is a devastating disease which kills ~1 million people yearly. The vast majority of lives lost due to malaria are children and pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. Although malaria is a treatable disease it continues to be one of the major causes of death, especially in poor settings. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Improved malaria case management in under-fives in the era of Artemisinin-based combination therapy in Tanzania

    Författare :Billy Ephraim Ngasala; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Malaria microscopy; case management; efficacy; effectiveness; artemether-lumefantrine; retreatment; lumefantrine concentrations; randomized trial; Tanzania;

    Sammanfattning : Early parasite-based diagnosis of malaria prior to treatment is critical for rational drug use, optimal outcome of febrile illness, patient adherence, prevention of parasite drug resistance, and reduced costs of health services. However, most primary health care (PHC) facilities in sub-Saharan Africa have no laboratory support and malaria diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and signs, which are nonspecific. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Plasmodium falciparum response to chloroquine and artemisinin based combination therapy (ACT) in Guinea-Bissau

    Författare :Johan Ursing; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe form of malaria and is the most common malaria species in sub-Saharan Africa. Chloroquine used to be the most common drug for the treatment of malaria. Due to development of resistance, chloroquine is no longer efficacious in most of the world. The first line option for treatment of P. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The molecular basis of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to the antimalarial lumefantrine

    Författare :Christin Sisowath; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria control is compromised by the development and spread of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to antimalarial drugs, which has caused an increase in malaria related morbidity and mortality. Artemisinin based combination therapy (ACT) has been implemented in almost all malaria endemic areas in an attempt to suppress drug resistance. LÄS MER
