1. Lung hyaluronan and lung water in the perinatal period
Sammanfattning : Hyaluronan is an important component of the lung extracellular matrix, with a high capacity for water immobilization, but information on perinatal changes in the lung hyaluronan concentration and their association with changes in the lung water content is limited. In this study, conducted both in rabbit pups and in human infants, we investigated changes in the hyaluronan concentration and distribution in the lung and in the lung water content after preterm or term birth, and changes produced by common antenatal and postnatal pathological conditions and treatments. 2. Antenatal corticosteroid exposure : studies on neonatal and long term outcome
Sammanfattning : Background: Preterm delivery affects six to twelve per cent of all pregnant women each year. Treatment with antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) has contributed greatly to improve outcome after preterm birth. LÄS MER
3. Rough beginnings : Executive function in adolescents and young adults after preterm birth and repeat antenatal corticosteroid treatment
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates long-term cognitive outcome in two cohorts of adolescents and young adults exposed to stressors during the perinatal period: one group born preterm (.... LÄS MER
4. Pulmonary disease in infancy, perinatal inflammatory risk factors and prophylaxis
Sammanfattning : Objective: In the last decades the survival rate of preterm infants has increased substantially.1-3 Despite improved intensive neonatal care the incidence of chronic lung disease in infants born preterm has not changed. LÄS MER
5. Cardiovascular function in 6-year-old children born extremely preterm
Sammanfattning : In western countries, approximately 6 to 12 per cent of all pregnancies end preterm, i.e., before 37 weeks of gestation. After the introduction of antenatal corticosteroids, surfactant therapy and neonatal intensive care, survival rates after preterm birth have increased markedly worldwide. LÄS MER
