  1. 6. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system

    Författare :Maria Brohlin; Mikael Wiberg; Martin Birchall; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone marrow-derived stromal cells; Schwann cells; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord injury; Neurotransplantation; anatomi; Human Anatomy; cell research; cellforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. 2. 7. The muscle cytoskeleton of mice and men : Structural remodelling in desmin myopathies

    Författare :Lena Carlsson; Lars-Eric Thornell; Anders Arnér; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; desmin; nestin; synemin; paranemin; plectin; αB-crystallin; skeletal muscle; heart muscle; myotendinous junction; motor endplate; costamere; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : The muscle fibre cytoskeleton of skeletal and heart muscle cells is composed mainly of intermediate filaments (IFs), that surround the myofibrils and connect the peripheral myofibrils with the sarcolemma and the nuclear membrane. Desmin is the first muscle specific IF protein to be produced in developing muscles and is the main IF protein in mature muscles. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Författare :Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 4. 9. Satellite cells in human skeletal muscle : molecular identification quantification and function

    Författare :Mona Lindström; Lars-Eric Thornell; Hannu Kalimo; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; satellite cell markers; NCAM; Pax7; MyoD; myogenin; DLK1 FA1; c-Met; human skeletal muscle; immunohistochemistry; muscle growth; muscle hypertrophy; Morphology; cell biology; pathology; Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle satellite cells located between the plasma membrane and the basal lamina of muscle fibres, could for many years, only be studied in situ by electron microscopy. The introduction of immunohistochemistry and the discovery of molecular markers of satellite cells then made them accessible for light microscopic studies and a wealth of information is today available. 5. 10. Human muscle spindles : complex morphology and structural organisation

    Författare :Jing-Xia Liu; William K. Ovalle; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :human; muscle spindle; intrafusal fiber; aging; biceps brachii; deep muscles of the neck; MyHC; mATPase; SERCA; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Muscle spindles are skeletal muscle mechanoreceptors that mediate the stretch reflex and provide axial and limb position information to the central nervous system. They have been proposed to play a major role in the pathophysiology of muscle pain. LÄS MER
