6. Pulmonary Injury Following Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats
Sammanfattning : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is a potentially life-threatening condition, sometimes leading to a systemic inflammatory response and the potential development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of intestinal I/R on pulmonary function with special emphasis on removal of excess alveolar fluid, pulmonary endothelial barrier permeability, leukocyte accumulation and function, and possible therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of pulmonary injury following intestinal I/R. 7. Mesenchymal heterogeneity in the adult human lung
Sammanfattning : The human lung is a complex tissue consisting of a heterogeneous mix of different structures and cells, each which a specific role that together contribute to the primary function of the organ: the gas exchange. Different mesenchymal cells populate the interstitial areas around airways and blood vessels and form the connective tissue together with the extracellular matrix. LÄS MER
8. The role of the endothelin system in experimental acute lung injury : with special reference to the formation of extra-vascular lung water
Sammanfattning : Acute lung injury is a major clinical challenge in the intensive care unit. Sepsis is the most frequent underlying cause of this pulmonary syndrome, which contains inflammation-induced diffuse alveolar damage and early stage high permeability edema. LÄS MER
9. Altered gene expression in the human airways during oxidative stress
Sammanfattning : The atmospheric accumulation of pollutant gases, such as N02 and ozone, has been associated with an increased airways hyper-reactivity within the healthy population. Moreover, those with conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases generally experience an exacerbation of their symptoms upon exposure to these noxious gases. LÄS MER
10. Molecular mechanisms of amyloid self-regulation
Sammanfattning : Amyloid is associated with both pathological protein deposits and the formation of functional protein structures. Therefore, several strategies have evolved to control the formation or inhibition of amyloid in vivo. LÄS MER
