1. Initiation of alternative pathway of complement, and development of novel liposomal coatings
Sammanfattning : The complement system is a central part of the innate immune system, and is an essential part in recognizing and clearing non/altered-self surfaces in the body. This thesis comprises of projects in which the initiation of the alternative pathway (AP) of complement in the fluid phase as well on various artificial and lipid surfaces has been studied. LÄS MER
2. Complement in Disease - Extracellular Proteins as Complement Regulators
Sammanfattning : Complement activation occurs during inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is thought to contribute to the chronic inflammation observed within the joints. Previous studies have shown that certain cartilage components of the small leucine-rich repeat protein (SLRP)-family regulate complement activity, thereby possibly contributing to disease progression. 3. Studies of EHEC and the complement system in renal diseases
Sammanfattning : This thesis addressed the diagnosis, pathogenesis and clinical course of specific renal diseases hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and dense deposit disease (DDD). HUS may be associated with infection caused by Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) or with complement dysfunction due to complement mutations or auto-antibodies (atypical HUS, aHUS). LÄS MER
4. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms
Sammanfattning : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). LÄS MER
5. The role of the complement system in arthritis and stroke
Sammanfattning : Complement is part of the innate immune system and functions primarily as a first line of defense against invading microorganisms. It is a complex cascade, which can be activated via three pathways: the classical, alternative and mannan-binding lectin pathway. LÄS MER
