16. Molecular studies on streptococcal surface proteins
Sammanfattning : Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus pyogenes are two related human pathogens causing different diseases. This thesis focuses on a number of surface proteins expressed by S. agalactiae and S. pyogenes and, more specifically, the molecular and biological characterization of these proteins. LÄS MER
17. Evolution of human alpha-herpesviruses
Sammanfattning : Herpesviridae is a large virus family with more than 100 members, which are highly disseminated among animals. Three sub-families have been classified; alpha-herpesviruses, beta-herpesviruses and gamma-herpesviruses. LÄS MER
18. Signaling and regulation of cysteinyl leukotriene receptors in intestinal epithelial cells and colon cancer
Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Western world. Chronic inflammation, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), increases the risk of cancer. Cysteinyl leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory mediators that are involved in IBD. LÄS MER
19. Cellular interactions of HAMLET and their role in cell death
Sammanfattning : HAMLET is a protein-lipid complex that selectively kills tumor cells. In this thesis, we identified new mechanisms, whereby HAMLET initiates and executes tumor cell death. HAMLET targets several cellular compartments ranging from the plasma membrane to the nucleus. LÄS MER
20. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia
Sammanfattning : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis.
