1. Sex and symbionts : New discoveries in local and regional patterns of coral ecology and reproduction
Sammanfattning : Coral reefs belong to the most diverse and the most threatened ecosystems on earth. Anthropogenic stressors and climate change have led to mortalities at levels unprecedented in modern times. The aims of this thesis are to investigate aspects of the corals’ ability to reproduce, disperse, adapt and survive. LÄS MER
2. Heavy metal contamination and toxicity : Studies of Macroalgae from the Tanzanian Coast
Sammanfattning : Concentrations of various metals are elevated above background levels in several intertidal areas along the Tanzanian coasts. However, there is little available information concerning the toxicity of these metals and how the uptake of these metals by bioindicators are influenced by external factors, such as heavy rains and increased coastal eutrophication, which tend to fluctuate. 3. Effects of warming on the green alga Cladophora glomerata : Ecological and genetic responses
Sammanfattning : Since the beginning of the 20th century, average global surface temperature has increased ~0.7 °C and the current scenarios predict that it will continue to rise additional 2-4 °C during the 21st century. LÄS MER
4. Dispersal in free-living, marine, benthic nematodes : passive or active processes?
Sammanfattning : Meiofauna, and especially marine nematodes are common in sediments around the world. Despite very wide ranging distributions in many nematode species, little is presently known about their dispersal mechanisms shaping these patterns. Rafting, and perhaps ballast water transport has been suggested as viable means for nematode long-range transport. LÄS MER
5. Zooplankton response to cyanotoxins
Sammanfattning : Mass development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is common in many lakes and coastal waters worldwide as a result of an increased nutrient loading. These blooms of cyanobacteria are undesirable for several reasons; thick mats of algae and unpleasant odour reduces the recreational values, bad taste reduces the quality of drinking water and the potent toxins produced by some species of cyanobacteria endanger human health.
