  1. 1. Airway mechanics of mice and men

    Författare :Lennart Lundblad; Malmö Klinisk fysiologi och nuklearmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; tomography; medical instrumentation; Clinical physics; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Penh; emphysema; airway resistance; gas conditioning; plethysmography; lung mechanics; Boyle s law; Physiology; medicinsk instrumentering; Klinisk fysiologi; radiology; enhanced pause; pulmonary fibrosis; micro computed tomography; forced oscillation technique; COPD;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis we explore and further develop several techniques used in the animal laboratory as well as in the clinical setting. In particular, we expand the understanding and usefulness of plethysmographic techniques in small rodents. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Airway effects of diesel exhaust in healthy and asthmatic subjects

    Författare :Charlotta Nordenhäll; Thomas Sandström; Ellinor Ädelroth; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; diesel exhaust; airway responsiveness; airway inflammation; lung function; asthmatics; immunohistochemistry; bronchial epithelium;

    Sammanfattning : Several epidemiological studies have revealed an association between particulate matter (PM) pollution and various health effects. Importantly, there is evidence to suggest that individuals with pre-existing respiratory disease, such as asthma, are more sensitive to elevated ground levels of particulate matter as compared to healthy subjects. 3. 3. Resistance breathing with PEP and CPAP : effects on respiratory parameters

    Författare :Maria Sehlin; Ola Winsö; Karin Wadell; Fredrik Öhberg; Monika Fagevik Olsèn; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chest physiotherapy; breathing exercises; PEP; CPAP; airway pressure; airflow; threshold resistor; flow resistor; inspiratory capacity; Borg CR10;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are two forms of resistance breathing used in spontaneously breathing patients. With a threshold resistor or a flow resistor, both PEP and CPAP provide a positive (elevated) pressure level during the expiratory phase. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Assessment of increased upper airway resistance in snorers. Methodological and diagnostic considerations

    Författare :Sören Berg; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; arousals.; pharyngeal pressure; intrathoracic pressure; hypopnea; respiratory ventilation; oxygenation; Non apneic snorers; upper airway obstruction; Otorhinolaryngology; audiology; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; audiologi; hörsel- och talorganen;

    Sammanfattning : Sleep-related partial upper airway obstruction may cause increased morbidity and mortality, but diagnosis and treatment of patients is varying and inconsistent. The present studies were aimed to evaluate presently applied indirect methods for assessing respiratory ventilation and to investigate the value and accuracy in estimating upper airway resistance during sleep by measuring intrathoracic pressure variation with a microchip catheter in the esophagus. 5. 5. The asthmatic airway response – effects on physiology and biomarkers

    Författare :Henning Stenberg; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :Asthma; Exhaled breath temperature; Exercise; Allergen challenge; Small airways; Airway provocations; Spirometry; Impulse oscillometry; Inert gas washout; Body plethysmography; Club cell protein CC16 ;

    Sammanfattning : Asthma is a common airway inflammatory disease, associated with a variable degree of airway obstruction. It is a heterogeneous condition with large variations in severity and clinical presentation. Moreover, disease activity can vary from time to time. Taken together, these factors make the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of asthma challenging. LÄS MER
