1. From Betterment to Bt maize : agricultural development and the introduction of genetically modified maize to South African smallholders
Sammanfattning : Agriculture has received renewed attention in poverty reduction efforts in Africa in recent years, and there are hopes that GM crops could have an important role in helping increase smallholder yields and reduce poverty. Drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and livelihoods perspectives, this thesis examines the ideas governing the Massive Food Production Programme (MFPP), an agricultural development programme aiming to reduce poverty by raising agricultural production in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and its local effects when implemented in smallholder communities. 2. Local and landscape-level impacts of agricultural intensification on arthropod communities and their interaction networks
Sammanfattning : Arthropods play a central role in agricultural landscapes being responsible for the delivery of many ecosystem services such as pollination, biological pest control, and nutrient cycling. But the current global decline of arthropods is intensified by habitat modification, loss and fragmentation, pesticide use and other intensive management practices. LÄS MER
3. Earthworm and arbuscular mycorrhizal communities in agricultural soils : management of key soil organisms for sustainable agriculture
Sammanfattning : Intensive agriculture is detrimental to soil biodiversity and functioning. Promoting communities of key soil organisms, such as earthworms and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, may help improve agricultural sustainability by replacing inputs with ecosystem services. LÄS MER
4. Food webs in agroecosystems : implications for biological control of insect pests
Sammanfattning : The management of insect pests in modern agriculture is dominated by chemical control, despite wide recognition of its detrimental impact on the environment and human health. As a sustainable alternative, the service of biological control of insect pests is provided by a diversity of natural enemies, such as ground dwelling carabids and spiders. LÄS MER
5. Phyllosphere of organically grown strawberries : interactions between the resident microbiota, pathogens and introduced microbial agents
Sammanfattning : The use of biological control agents (BCAs) is regarded as a promising measure to control important foliar strawberry diseases such as grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis) in the organic strawberry cultivation. However, the use of biological control agents (BCAs) in the phyllosphere is still challenging as this environment is very harsh and dynamic, in particular under field conditions. LÄS MER
