1. Phase-Contrast and High-Resolution Optics for X-Ray Microscopy
Sammanfattning : X-ray microscopy is a well-established technique for nanoscale imaging. Zone plates are used as microscope objectives and provide high resolution, approaching 10 nm, currently limited by fabrication issues. This Thesis presents zone plate optics that achieve either high resolution or phase contrast in x-ray microscopy. LÄS MER
2. Synchrotron-based characterization of mechanobiological effects on the nanoscale in musculoskeletal tissues
Sammanfattning : Collagen is the main organic building block of musculoskeletal tissues. Despite collagen being their smallest load bearing unit, these tissues differ significantly in mechanical function and properties. A major factor behind these differences is their hierarchical organization, from the collagen molecule up to the organ scale. LÄS MER
3. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification
Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them. The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 4. On Surface Characteristics and Microstructural Development of Soft Magnetic Composite Powder and Components
Sammanfattning : Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) products manufactured by traditional Powder Metallurgical (PM) techniques, are strong candidate materials for electromagnetic applications. Their advantages are based on cost and energy efficient production methods, shape complexity realization and uniquely uniform and isotropic three dimensional (3D) magnetic properties. LÄS MER
5. Multi-scale fabric evolution during hydro-mechanical probing of fine-grained soils
Sammanfattning : The majority of the studies on sensitive clays so far have focused on the hydro-mechanical response at engineering scale, using concepts from continuum mechanics. The fundamental mechanisms at particle scale, underpinning the emerging response, have so far been studied with post mortem analyses. LÄS MER
