1. Rift Valley fever : consequences of virus-host interactions
Sammanfattning : Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne virus which has the ability to infect a large variety of animals including humans in Africa and Arabian Peninsula. The abortion rate among these animals are close to 100%, and young animals develop severe disease which often are lethal. LÄS MER
2. Bird-parasite interactions : Using Sindbis virus as a model system
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the evolutionary interactions between birds and a parasite, the mosquito-borne Sindbis virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). In conclusion, the results show that the Sindbis virus is widespread among birds, and that the fitness of infected hosts may be reduced by the virus. LÄS MER
3. Avian Influenza Virus : Deciphering receptor interactions and their role in interspecies transmission
Sammanfattning : Influenza A virus (IAV) annually infects approximately 5–15 % of the human population, causing ~500,000 deaths globally. Novel IAVs have emerged and spread pandemically in the human population, but have over time established endemic circulation with reduced pathogenicity causing seasonal influenza. The natural reservoir of IAVs is wild waterfowl. LÄS MER
4. Host-Virus Interactions in Asthma and COPD
Sammanfattning : Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are associated with periods of worsened symptoms, known as exacerbations. Severe exac-erbations can result in hospitalisation, irreversible decline of the disease and sometimes death. Thus, exacerbations are a major cause of morbidity, mortality and healthcare cost. 5. Characterizing important flavivirus-host interactions : Replication, assembly, restriction factors and vaccine development
Sammanfattning : The genus Flavivirus (family Flaviviridae) consists of important zoonotic viruses that cause morbidity and mortality worldwide. These viruses are enveloped and have a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome encoding a polyprotein. LÄS MER
