  1. 1. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study

    Författare :Martin Wohlin; Lars Lind; Johan Sundström; Samar Basu; Stefan Agewall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicine; Epidemiology; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 2. 2. Analysis of Complex Genetic Traits in Population Cohorts using High-throughput Genotyping Technology

    Författare :Andreas Dahlgren; Ann-Christine Syvänen; Håkan Melhus; Markus Perola; Struan Grant; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Molecular medicine; SNP; TCF7L2; HHEX; COL11A1; ESR1; body height; type 2 diabetes mellitus; proinsulin; ULSAM; complex genetic trait; genotyping technology; Molekylärmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Most human traits and common diseases have a complex genetic makeup involving more than one gene. The work presented in this thesis investigates standing body height and the common disease type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Prostate Cancer; Metabolic Risk Factors, Drug Utilisation, Adverse Drug Reactions

    Författare :Birgitta Grundmark; Lars Holmberg; Björn Zethelius; Gunnar Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; Epidemiology; Pharmacoepidemiology; Metabolic Syndrome; Selenium; Smoking; hOGG1; MnSOD; Competing Risk; Adherence; Persistance; Medical Possession Ratio; MPR; Signal Detection; PRR; proportional reporting ratio; ULSAM; PcBaSE; EudraVigilance; SPDR; Swedish Prescribe Drug Registry; NPCR; National Prostate Cancer Registry; SDR; Signal; disproportionality analysis; PRR-TA; EudraVigilance; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi; Kirurgi; särskilt urologi; Urology; Oncology; Onkologi; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Increased possibilities during the last decades for early detection of prostate cancer have sparked research on preventable or treatable risk factors and on improvements in therapy. Treatments of the disease still entail significant side effects potentially affecting men during the rest of their lives. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Measurement Variability Related to Insulin Secretion and Sensitivity : Assessment and Implications in Epidemiological Studies

    Författare :Lars Berglund; Björn Zethelius; Johan Bring; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : There is a growing interest in random measurement variability of biological variables. In regression models, such variability of the predictors yields biased estimators of coefficients (regression dilution bias). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Insights into the Effects of Type 2 Diabetes on Bone Health

    Författare :Adam Mitchell; Liisa Byberg; Karl Michaëlsson; Tove Fall; Håkan Melhus; Ann Schwartz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Sammanfattning : Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an increased risk of hip fracture, despite a stable or even greater bone mineral density (BMD). Bone area is linked to hip fracture risk independent of BMD and smaller bone area has been reported in T2DM subjects at the radius and tibia, but information at the hip is lacking. LÄS MER
