21. Clinical, Genetic and Metabolic Characterisation of LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults)
Sammanfattning : Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) comprises about 10% of patients initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but who are positive for pancreatic islet antibodies, especially to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADabs). The present studies focused on clinical, genetic and metabolic characterisation of patients with LADA. LÄS MER
22. Genetics of Diabetes Subtypes. Characterization of novel cluster-based diabetes subtypes
Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been reproducibly clustered into five subtypes based on six-clinical variables; age at diabetes onset, body mass index (BMI), Glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibodies (GADA), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and insulin secretion and resistance estimated as HOMA2B and HOMA2IR derived from fasting glucose and Cpeptide. These subtypes have different disease progression and risk of complications. LÄS MER
23. Studies of the Pancreas: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Aetiology
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease of severe insulin deficiency through loss of β cells in the endocrine pancreas. The T1D dogma maintains that a precipitating event unleashes autoimmunity in at-risk individuals, often measured through autoantibodies against β cell antigens. LÄS MER
24. The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS): Ascertainment, risk factors, and problems with classification
Sammanfattning : The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS) registers diabetes in young adults aged 15-34 years in Sweden. This thesis aims to validate the ascertainment, methods in the classification of diabetes, and putative etiological factors such as family background, psychological stress, and BMI, that may affect the incidence of diabetes in young adults, in the DISS registry. 25. The role of galectin-1 in type 2 diabetes. Clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Aim: The purpose of this thesis was to identify a new agent in the subcutaneous adipose tissue and assess its clinical potential in the context of type 2 diabetes. Study I: Through a combination of microdialysis and mass-spectrometry, we found increased galectin-1 levels in the subcutaneous adipose tissue in a small experimental study of 15 men with and without type 2 diabetes.
