  1. 1. Effects of Marine Protected Areas on Tropical Seagrass Ecosystems

    Författare :Elisa Alonso Aller; Johan S Eklöf; Charlotte Berkström; Martin Gullström; Glenn Hyndes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; seagrass; marine protected areas; management; conservation; fish; herbivory; Western Indian Ocean; East Africa; tropical; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seagrass beds are highly productive coastal ecosystems that sustain a rich and diverse associated fauna and flora. Increasing anthropogenic pressures threaten seagrass ecosystems and have already led to major seagrass losses across the world. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Seaweed in the tropical seascape : Importance, problems and potential

    Författare :Stina Tano; Christina Halling; Sofia Wikström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seaweed; Macroalgae; Eucheumoids; Non-indigenous; Haplotype; Fish; Nursery; Epifauna; Diversity; Seaweed farming; Zanzibar; East Africa; Tropical; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : The increasing demand for seaweed extracts has led to the introduction of non-native seaweeds for farming purposes in many tropical regions. Such intentional introductions can lead to spread of non-native seaweeds from farming areas, which can become established in and alter the dynamics of the recipient ecosystems. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Climate Change sensitivity of Photosynthesis and Respiration in Tropical Trees

    Författare :Myriam Mujawamariya; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carbon dioxide; Climate change; Drought; Elevation gradient; Photosynthesis; Respiration; Tropical montane forest; Tropical trees; Warming;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical climate is getting warmer, with more pronounced dry periods in large areas. The productivity and climate feedbacks of future tropical forests depend on the ability of trees to acclimate their physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and leaf respiration, to these new conditions. 4. 4. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests

    Författare :Edu Efiom; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tropical rainforests; bushmeat hunting; primates; seedling recruitment; interseedling competition; community composition; functional traits; ecosystem services; human livelihoods;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 5. 5. SAWING STRATEGIES FOR TROPICAL HARDWOOD SPECIES : Simulation studies based on industrial conditions of Mozambique

    Författare :Pedro Ah Shenga; Dick Sandberg; Olof Broman; Mats Nylinder; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sawing strategies; tropical hardwood species; simulation; volume yield; log grading; umbila; jambirre; Träteknik; Wood Science and Engineering;

    Sammanfattning : The harvesting of Mozambique tropical hardwood species is considerable higher than the natural regrowth in the forest and the stock is decreasing drastically. Therefore, it is important to improve the material recovery when the wood is refined (i.e., in sawing and further refinement to products such as joineries, furniture etc. LÄS MER
