    Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer is one of our most common malignancies and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. About 1/3 of the tumors are located in the rectum. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) : clinical and experimental aspects

    Författare :Lennart Berglin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :CNV; angiogenesis; age-related macular degeneration; AMD; aging; surgery; endothelial cells; VEGF; MMP; TIMP; MMP-2; immunohistochemistry; ECM; RPE; Bruch s membrane; wound healing; inflammation; macrophages; in-situ hybridization; mRNA; immature vessels; MMP-9; TIMP- 3; MMP-2 deficiency;

    Sammanfattning : This work comprises different aspects of choroidal neovacularization (CNV); a leading cause of visual loss in the aged. It is an example of angiogenesis and a complication of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) The purpose was to study if patient age influences outcome of CNV surgery, to characterize the cellular content of CNV, to analyze the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and various matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their inhibitors (TIMP) in CNV and to study if MMP-2 influences experimental CNV growth. 3. 8. Recruitment of circulating cells into skeletal muscle : occurrence and possible mechanisms

    Författare :Anna Strömberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Tissue remodeling is a central process for all life. When a tissue is exposed to environmental stress such as injury, both local cells and cells from the periphery are recruited to regenerate and remodel the tissue. During the last decades the importance of resident cells, e.g. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Transmigration of Toxoplasma gondii across biological barriers

    Författare :Emily C. Ross; Antonio Barragan; Ildiko Rita Dunay; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apicomplexa; blood-brain barrier; leukocyte; immune cell; transendothelial migration; cell adhesion molecule; host-pathogen; FAK; integrin; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that can likely infect all warm-blooded vertebrates, with estimates of up to 30% of the global human population being infected. Although infection with T. gondii is usually asymptomatic or mild, in immunocompromised individuals infection can lead to lethal toxoplasmic encephalitis. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Urinary tract infection and renal scarring

    Författare :Milan Chromek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :urinary tract infection; renal scarring; cathelicidin; LL-3 7; NIMP-9; TIMP-1;

    Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common bacterial infection. Although most patients with UTI have a good prognosis, there is a risk of serious complications in a group of them. LÄS MER
